PBM Anaemia Escape Room for CSL Vifor

Gamified learning experience for healthcare professionals to improve patient outcomes in the treatment of iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) in pre-operative patients

Client — CSL Vifor

Global leader in iron deficiency and iron deficiency anaemia therapies and is a pioneer in iron-based therapies.

CSL Vifor is determined to help raise awareness about Patient Blood Management (PBM) and how its implementation is associated with improved patient outcomes and reduced health care costs.

Healthcare professionals (HCPs) often lack sufficient awareness or understanding of Patient Blood Management (PBM), particularly the impact of identifying and treating anaemia before surgery. This knowledge gap can lead to poorer patient outcomes, longer hospital stays and higher healthcare costs.

HCPs often face difficulty implementing PBM due to:

  1. Knowledge gaps in identifying and correcting anaemia and IDA.
  2. A lack of engaging educational tools to promote awareness of PBM's benefits.

The PBM Anaemia Escape Room aimed to bridge these gaps by creating an interactive learning experience that could be used both digitally and in conference settings.

Solution
PBM – solution

We have developed an interactive, gamified escape room simulator for HCPs that highlights the importance of PBM and pre-operative anaemia care. This interactive educational tool was designed to engage users through a scenario-based learning experience where decisions directly impact the outcome of a virtual patient, Mary.

By answering questions about IDA correctly, participants help Mary, a virtual patient, recover and leave the hospital post-surgery.

The simulator demonstrated how clinical decisions impact patient outcomes, emphasising the importance of optimising red blood cell mass preoperatively.

My role
UI approach
  • Designed and delivered the PBM simulator tool for web and conference environments

  • Developed wireframes, prototypes and UI for multiple devices, including large screens and iPad Pro

  • Presented the project to the client, receiving positive feedback
  • Collaborated with internal and external stakeholders to ensure seamless execution

  • Conducted Quality Assurance (QA) to ensure functionality across all breakpoints

Simulator localisation

Translation guide – 2

PBM Anaemia Escape Room Simulator had a positive impact and proved to be effective. As a result, CSL Vifor localised the tool for its European markets.

To support this effort, we provided a guide on character count to ensure smooth UI localisation.

This guide also helped adapt the tool for conferences and web experiences across desktop, tablet, and mobile platforms.

Simulator recognition

Mary – award winner

The tool has received multiple awards and has helped healthcare professionals (HCPs) recognise the importance of Patient Blood Management (PBM) while providing an effective educational experience through gamification.
